My practice is informed by architectural space, with the former medical school of UCD at Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin providing the source material for my Still Life body of work. In exploring this space, one phenomenon that caught my attention was how the high ceilings of the former dissection room at Earlsfort (which were designed to limit exposure to formaldehyde), now provided interesting acoustics for musicians of the National Concert Hall who rehearsed in the room. I have a personal connection with the space as I studied Anatomy dissections there when I first left school. The hush of the dissection room had been replaced by the noise of drumming as spaces of scientific enquiry had become places of musical experimentation and freedom. Percussion instruments were littered about the space, and these simple shapes informed the composition of my paintings.

My short film Still Life premiered at Dublin International Film Festival 2019. Cinematography: Colm Hogan, Editor: Conall de Cléir, Score: Seán Carpio, Sound recording: John Brennan, Surround Sound Mix: Paul Rowland

A dissection room becomes a rehearsal space for drummers and their beat drives out the dead
